Build and Repair

Rod Builds

Options for a Custom Build

Rod Blanks

There are a great many blanks available . A custom rod is usually built for a specific use such as Bass, Salmon, Steelhead, or Walleye.

Handle and reel seat.

There are different materials for handles such as cork, carbon fiber, polyurethane, or even a treated twine. They can be ordered in specific lengths and thickness or built to size. The reel seat can be chosen to match the particular reel type and size.

My personal preference is the polyurethane handle. I do not really want to use cork as it is an insulator which can affect bite sensitivity.

Guides

There are three basic types of guides: Spinning,  Casting, or Fly. There are different grades of materials  as well as sizes and colors.

Thread

Thread comes  in a wide variety of colors and designs. It can be used for intricate and exotic patterns.  At this stage in my life I am not interested in learning to do complex wrapping that does nothing to improve the performance of the rod and increases the price of the rod substantially. There are different ways to decorate a rod using combinations of colors, types of thread, or even metallic flakes in the finish.

Repoairs.

A repair can be as simple as replacing a tiptop, Fixing a chewed up cork handle, or replacing guides.

Tip Top

Broken rod tips are very common. Sometimes the same tip top can be reused. Other times a larger tip top may be needed.  Most sporting goods stores will do this for the price of the new tip top.

Cork Handles

The easiest repair for a cork handle is to fill any gouged areas and cover it with a length of heat shrink tubing.

Guides

Replacing a single guide can be done if the guide has been saved. Sometimes it can be difficult to match the old guides exactly. On an older favorite rod new guides may be a worthwile upgrade.

Reel Seat

Repairing or replacing a reel seat can be a really involved process. Possibly turning into a complete rebuild.
